Chapter Four

My beast was going fucking crazy. Something was wrong with Hanson and neither of us liked it. I'd never seen a sick immortal before. And I'd never seen Hanson so damn docile.

I had to assume it was some kind of harpy sickness, since neither Leighton nor Spence seemed to be freaking out… though they both did seem concerned, sending each other worried looks every once in a while.

I watched Hanson wipe down a sticky spill on the bar, and though he seemed to be standing a little better than he had that afternoon when his dad had carried him down the stairs, it looked like every movement he made hurt him. And his skin had only become grayer. The once bronzed, almost gleaming flesh was starting to look leached of any kind of hue. Even his hair looked less lustrous.

When some man reached across the top of the bar, grabbing Hanson's wrist and he actually cried out in pain, I was by his side instantly, my beast furious and probably glowing in my eyes as I latched on to the man's arms, squeezing hard enough to feel the bones of his forearm start to bow together.

"Fuck!" he yelped, letting go. "I didn't even grab him that hard, Ridge," Martin said, jerking his arm away from me. "I was just trying to get his attention, because he was dazed out and I'd already yelled at him twice."

"Just don't fucking touch him," I growled, sliding an arm around Hanson's back and easing him away from the bar and toward his favorite alley. The one I usually dragged him out of after taking a cigarette out of his hand.

Hanson groaned as he leaned against the brick wall, letting his head fall back as he massaged the wrist Martin had said he hadn't even grabbed that hard.

I gently reached out, taking his arm and moving his fingers so I could see it. He was bruised. Purple and black marred the grayish flesh, and I growled, ready to go back in there and kill Martin, but something a bit more pressing pushed itself to the front of my mind.

"Okay, what the fuck is going on?" I growled, continuing to watch his arm in hopes that it would start healing like it already should have. "Why the hell aren't you healing? And why are you gray?"

Hanson jerked his arm away. The motion must have been too much, because he hissed, locking up for a moment before melting back into the wall.

"I don't want to talk about it, Ridge," he said quietly, his voice flat.

I'd never seen him act like that. He wasn't one to not want to talk about anything. If he had a problem, he was damn sure going to let someone know. Something was definitely wrong, and as much as I wanted to believe it didn't have anything to do with me, it was pretty clear that he hadn't started feeling like this until after our encounter the day before.

"I don't give a
